“U Joyride studiju me čekala ekipa vrhunskih glazbenika, najboljih bluzera s kojima sam do sada radio. Grammyjem nagrađeni bubnjar Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith, sin pokojnog bubnjara iz pretećeg sastava legendarnog Muddyja Watersa, Bo Diddleyev nećak, basist E.G. McDaniel, gitarist Eric Noden i još jedan grammyjevac, snimatelj Blaise Barton. Kako je to već jednom rekao jedan stari blueser – za blues nije bitan prostor već ljudi s kojima sviraš”, prisjetio se Tomislav Goluban.
Tekstove na engleskom jeziku Goluban je – na inzistiranje producenta – ovoga puta otpjevao nonšalantnim vokalom u maniri starih bluesera u kojima je bitan sadržaj s višesmislenim konotacijama. Ono što se naizgled doima jednostavnim i jasnim, često između redaka donosi sasvim nova značenja i poruke. Tako je na ovom albumu Goluban u tematskom smislu nastavio gdje je prije 5 godina stao s albumom Blow Junkie: emotivno sažimanje radosti („Searchin’ For My Baby“, „Home Made Honey“), vječita potrage za nedostižnim idealima („Can’t Find Myself“), unutarnja bol i patnja („Locked Heart“, „Bag Full Of Troubles“). Tu su također i priče o stvarnim događajima („Jerry Ricks On My Mind“), a posebnost ovog engleskog izdanja jest i jedna otpjevana na hrvatskom jeziku – obrada tradicionalnog folk nasljeđa Golubanovog zavičaja Hrvatskog Zagorja („Išel budem v kleticu/ I Will Go To My Cottage“). Ravnomjerni odnosi veselih, poletnih il epršavih, te onih laganijih, elegičnijih i senzibilnijih trenutaka uklopljenih u pravi albumski klasicizam od 45 (točnije 46.34) minuta, namijenjen je širem spektru publike. Pjesme se kotrljaju urazličitim psiho-emotivnim brzinama i područjima, koji put i sarkastičnim kontrastima, iziskujući od onih što od bluesa očekuju i više od uobičajenog da pomno istraže svaki detalj.

Tomislav “Little Pigeon” Goluban, Croatian blues musician, composer, harmonica player and singer, is unique by his expression. With his passion, sense of humor and catchy appearance, he can really provide the audience with an interesting and original show. His surname “Golub” translates to “Pigeon” in English, providing the inspiration for his stage name. His tenth studio album, “Chicago Rambler”, was recorded in Chicago’s “Joy Ride Studios”, live across two afternoons in January of 2018. A calm and collected figure, Goluban didn’t have to struggle to connect with the American musicians. His personal musical sound is a perfect fit for electric Chicago blues, and it’s this combination that works so well! With many elements of classical blues, 12 tracks written by Tomislav Goluban were recorded during a session. The material is concisely performed, spontaneously directed and filled with the Chicago blues atmosphere. A lot is hidden and can be revealed with repeated listens. This is a great combination of everything music is and should be: limitless, creative, brave and unique.
After 20 years of intense study of one of America’s greatest art forms from afar in his homeland, Croatia, singer songwriter and harmonica master, Tomislav “Little Pigeon” Goluban made a journey to the source to record an album of authentic blues music in the Windy City for his 10th studio album,“Chicago Rambler.” Goluban enlisted the skills of prominent figures in the Chicago blues scene, led by acclaimed producer and guitarist Eric Noden to collaborate with him on 11 new songs written for the project. A year ago, Tomislav flew to Chicago to record at Joy Ride Studios. Noden wisely brought in two “Sons of the Blues” as the rhythm section; E.G. McDaniel on bass, and Kenny “Beedy Eyes” Smith on drums, both following in their fathers’ footsteps, building prestigious careers for themselves while preserving their musical heritage. Harmonica man Joe Filisko also contributed to the project by playing harmonica on two songs, and engineer Blaise Burton manned the console for the frenetic two-day session.
The full tilt ‘Pigeon Swing’ kicks off the album with much pizzazz, as Goluban blows like Little Walter resurrected on an instrumental that was supposed to be a bonus track but has so much fire it was pushed to the lead-off slot. The 12/8 blues ‘Locked Heart’ reveals the influence of Jimmy Reed and Slim Harpo on the timeless tale of a soft-hearted bluesman. The heavy-duty south side shuffle, ‘Bag Full Of Troubles,’ is a spot-on Chicago-land prototype that could only be delivered by seasoned pros. Inspired by the friendship between Goluban and the late country bluesman “Philadelphia” Jerry Ricks, the tasty rhumba, ‘Jerry Ricks On My Mind,’ recants images from the last concert he performed alongside Goluban before his untimely death in 2007. He was buried in the cemetery in Kastav (Croatia) where the annual Tribute to Jerry Ricks – Kastav Blues festival is now held.
Noden’s slide guitar moans with sorrow of a hundred-year flood on the lowdown ‘Can’t Find Myself’ and Smith demonstrates his encyclopedic knowledge of authentic blues grooves as he nails the high energy boogaloo surf blues for the audacious ‘Home Made Honey’ and classic Bo Diddley beat for ‘Do The Right Thing.’ Between those two numbers, Goluban’s fantastic harmonica imitation of a train, an old-time tradition among harp players, introduces ‘One Way Ticket,’ a traveling blues ramble. He lays out a twist on a Muddy Waters’ style blues with ‘Little Pigeon’ extolling his manly prowess to arouse a lover. Track ten is an acoustic version of ‘Jerry Ricks On My Mind.’ The quartet glides thru the Jimmy Reed style country blues ‘Searchin’ For My Baby,’ before transforming a traditional Croatia folk song ‘Išel budem v kleticu (I’ll Go To My Cottage)’ into a straight-ahead Chi-town shuffle from a hot Saturday night at the Peppermint Lounge.
With this album Tomislav Goluban fulfills his dream of wandering the musical streets of the city that gave birth to so many of his heroes and becoming a bona fide Chicago rambler.
